Optimisation of process
optimisation of process and machinery for the production of new protein-based thermoformable material
optimisation of process and machinery for the production of new protein-based thermoformable material
new protein-based thermoformable material building on past projects developping barrier whey coatings
There is a growing need and significant market opportunity for more sustainable packaging solutions. ThermoWhey will build on past projects that developed a biopolymer-coating based on more expensive pure whey protein isolates (WPI) for plastic films capable of replacing the expensive synthetic oxygen barrier layers currently used in food packaging such as Etylene vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOH).
Within the Thermowhey project, bio-based trays, jars, cups and blisters will be delivered. Solutions will present high deformation rates, stable thermoforming behaviour, good barrier properties and be produced consistently at semi-industrial scale meeting a real industrial need.

ThermoWhey will provide 4 European SMEs with improved manufacturing capacities or related services to deliver a new bio-based thermoformable barrier coating solution in the wide packaging sector. This will also benefit to their end users especially in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors.[:]
